I have never sanitized a bottle cap. I keep my work area clean when bottling and the caps in a ziplock bag when storing. I've never had an issue.

I had the same issue with a boil over one time. My wife, God bless her, cleaned it up with a paste made from baking soda and water. It took some effort, but it was achievable.
