you'll be fine, but making a starter has never hurt anything. makes sure the yeast is nice and viable. 1056 is a pretty resiliant yeast too.

i think you'll be fine to use it a couple more times. it won't be the yeast that get funky. they would have produced fusels and esters in the beer itself. if any died off they'll sink to the bottom...
