Completely unscientific and purely personal, but after I stopped chasing efficiency my beers got better. All of my 70-75% beers always had a more satisfying mouthfeel and better flavors than my 85%...

Exactly. THe yeast is settling out and there is less to reflect light back. I bet if you took a sample from the fermenter it wouldn't be remotely dark, it would be pale straw colored as it should be.
