Freezer dial confusion...?

I recently acquired a used chest freezer and dial looks like ye:

I am confused by the rising numbers going in the opposite direction of the "Colder" arrows...

Is the freezer, now set at "1", at its coldest setting?

This is different than other freezer (manuals) I looked at {OFF, 1, 2, 3,to 7, coldest} and breaks a number of UI rules, I think...

That is odd. I guess I would ignore the numbers and just follow the arrows.

you can always verify with a thermometer.

I am doing that right now, even though I shouldn't have to...

even after looking at the dial some more there is NO way to derive any logic from it!

In either direction, I doubt you'll find a temp setting that isn't freezing (in case you're trying to keg in that thing).

I would imagine that if it is in the 'off' position, whichever way it can turn, the further you turn it the colder it gets...

This will be fitted with a Ranco unit for lagering.

I wanted to find the low setting, but you are right, It will cycle anyway, within the freezing temp range.
