my cider has been fermenting for about 8 days. there has been a lot of constant airlock activity. i checked the gravity 4 days ago and it was 1.040 and again today and it was the same. again there has been loads of activity but no drop it gravity after 4 days. OG was 1.080

Well yeah, the hydrometer is based on viscosity/density so any co2 in solution will essentially artificially lift the hydrometer, leading to a higher gravity reading then the truth.

+1 on the CO2. I had a batch 'go up' in gravity after a week :D
Shook the thief, ton-o-bubbles later the reading was down...
