I I have a porter in a plastic fermenter. On top of the cap I have the pressure release thing on top. The water in the piece is bubbling. Does that mean my fermentation is active?

yes, it means there are gases releasing from your fermenter. That's good sign. Just note for the future, lack of bubbles is not a tell tale sign that you're not fermenting.

Grab a comfy chair, pour a beer and start reading. Welcome to the hobby.

I was just wondering because I pitched at about high80 degrees and was hoping I didn't kill the yeast.

The bubbles are a good sign... but I'm hoping you've since cooled it to about 65-70F

I have I got the fermenter sitting in a Tupperware bin filled with cool water.
