I've brewed a few batches now and want to brew my own IPA. I still don't have my all grain brewing setup finished so this is a partial mash. It's my first attempt at making my own recipe so let me know if it sucks. Brutal honesty is appreciated, thanks.

5 gallon batch
6 lbs golden light dme ( no pale at brew
store)
1 lb crystal 80 at 153 degrees for 25 min
60 min boil
60 min 1 oz falconers flight
20 min 1 oz crystal
5 min 1 oz crystal
5 min 1 oz simcoe
0 min 1 oz falconer flight
Dry hop 1 oz simcoe
Using us-05 yeast

I think crystal 80 is too dark for an IPA, but that's just my opinion. I prefer 40L for an IPA specialty malt.

80 is a little dark for an IPA, I normally use 40 or 60. I use 80 in my cascadian dark ale tho. 1 lb. is alot of crystal no matter what for an IPA. I tend to stick to a 1/4 or a 1/2 lb.

I'd you want a big hop aroma, increase your dry hop to 3 oz. Falconer's Flight or Citra would be good additions.

A lb of crystal 80 will work, but you'll end up with something like Sierra Nevada Celebration, a bit darker with some residual sweetness.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm going to change to 1/2 lb crystal 60. And I do want a good hop aroma but won't too much dry hop additions give off a "grassy" resin?

if you dont leave them in for long you'll be good (5-6 days or so at max)...

for example, surlys beers have 4-8oz of dry hops per 5 g batch, but they're only in for 5 days or so

That's what I figured. I've also heard that after 24 hours some of the more complex aromas start to fade out. I'm thinking about doing 2oz for 3-5 days and 1 oz for 24 hours.
