I finished bottling our Octoberfest saturday evening and dumped the remainder of a fine layer of beer and all the yeast, into a tall jar.

It has a lid but it's not on tight and is in the fridge.

I tried saturday to pour off the wort but the yeast were still pretty fluid and easily poured out.

Do I wait for the yeast to settle to the bottom and cake up?

The idea is that you want to clean out or wash the detritus - trub, hop debris, dead yeast, etc - out of the slurry for storage. If you do not then there is the chance that that debris will begin to autolycise and impart off flavors to subsequent brews.

This thread https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f13/yeast-washing-illustrated-41768/ explains the process of washing in painstaking detail.

thanks

i'll check it out at home. The firewall at work blocks most picture hosts and video streaming is a no-no.
