No Shutoff Valve on Regulator

Just got a CO2 Regulator, identical to this one, http://stores.kegconnection.com/Detail.bok?no=56
but without the shutoff valve.

Is a shutoff valve essential? Can I just turn off the CO2 on the tank when connecting, and then turn it on to the pressure I need?

not essential, no, I just use the tank shutoff valve myself. I don't have one either, and have never had a problem.

The shutoff is nice, but not necessary. Even nicer, though, is that they're check valves, so you can't get any beer backing up into your regulator.

MOST shutoff valves have a built-in check valve, but not all. Found that out the hard way...

One of my regs has no shutoff, and I don't miss it.
