Look for a good extract recipe for this. If you could give me a link or the recipe it would be greatly appreciated.

I think I got this one from this site a while back. I thought it was from BYO but their recipe is a good bit different. I never did a side by side comparison but the beer came out amazing. I mean it was stupid how good this beer was.

12# 2-row pale malt
1# Carapils Malt
8oz Crystal 80
1.5 Chinook @ 60 min boil
1 oz Cascade @ 10 min boil
1 oz Centennial @ 10 min boil
1 oz Cascade Dry hop for 7 days
1 oz Centennial Dry hop for 7 days
1 oz Chinook Dry hop for 7 days
California Ale - White Labs WLP001

Mash at 155 F for 60 minutes. I let this one sit in the primary for 21 days and secondary for 7. After it bottle conditioned, it was fantastic almost immediately.

Not sure if this is much help since I didn't do a side-by-side but this was one incredible beer.

My bad, I just realized you said an extract version. Try using 9# of LME instead of the base grain and keep the specialty malts and everything else the same.

If you are doing straight up extract brewing, then I think amber would work well but if you are going to be doing a partial mash then I would try light LME.
