Will a temp controller affect a Manual Defrost fridge?

Hey everyone, I have a GMR04 GE 4.4 CF Dorm Fridge which has a manual defrost.

I was about to buy a temp controller to finally get it hooked up to automatic temp regulation. My question is, since I have a manual defrost cycle, do I even care about the defrost at all? Im guessing a temp controller isnt going to **** up the defrost since I have to do it myself, so I'm good to just plug it in and go?

No, my first kegger was a manual defrost. It rarely iced up at all. When it did, I shut off the controller, opened the freezer and let it thaw.

What is the issue with auto defrost fridges? That they will not turn on when you tell them to because of the defrost cycle?
