Hops in close proximity to spices

I did some searching, and aside from "green manure" references couldn't find anything to help:

Does anyone have any experience or thoughts regarding the growing of herbs/spices in close proximity to planted hops? Specifically, i've got two rhizomes 5' apart, and the wife is wondering if it's possible to grow basil or oregano near them.

Other than hops being heavy feeders with aggressive surface roots, you should be ok. Once they get to 5-6 feet, you can strip the lower leaves so the herbs aren't in the shade.
