As a noob to this forum and to home brewing i figured i would post some assumptions just to promote some interesting conversation, nothing more!

1. since there is nothing much more American than football and beer im going to assume that most members here spend fall sundays watching a game or two and brewing up some beer.

2. a majority of the members are not nascar fans even though nascar is a drinking sport. reason being, a majority of nascar fans are redneck, budwiser loving americans that love bud too much to try something else!

so do you fit category 1 or 2 or both? as you can probably tell im not a nascar fan even though im about as big a car guy as it gets!

any other noob assumptions old or new, wrong or right?

1) nope...I watch some football, but don't necessarily go out of my way to plan my Sunday (or Sat. for College)around a game. Although I did watch the Lions today to see if they'd actually win...

I do like Minor league Hockey, vintage 1800's recreation baseball (which I'm involved in) and REAL futball (soccer).

But I also enjoy the theater (especially Shakespear in the park), museums, and just about any type of live music,(Form classical to Punk/avantgarde/alternative) I spend my summers hitting outdoor music and art festivals in my area. I would probably rather plan and be involved in one of these things, then sitting watching football, or pretty much any sport.

2)Hell no...

So I'd have to say you struck out bigtime on me.

not something i would typically expect to hear from a home brewer, at least from the typical stereotype. but i can respect that, my hobby of choice is photography.

But that's YOUR misconception about homebrewers...

I've met everything from artists, doctors, bluecollar types, firefighters, engineers (lot's of them for some reason) hell the Mayor Pro-tem of my town is one of my brewbuddies, and he is an 1800's historian (and the founder of our vintage Base ball team.)

You can't judge a book by it's cover no matter what category you are trying to fit anyone into...

Look at me, I'm a minister, but I'm also an audio visual specialist who works in medical education, and has worked in televsion and radio. And in my 20's I worked in the music industry.

I also have written and published erotica and hosted an online discussion on sex and spirituality on a porn site. I also have taught human sexuality, led men's retreats, made african drums and flutes. Hot air balooned a few times. I have been a clown. I directed and shot 3 sex educational films for use with medical residents. I did freelance photography for a number or years.

I've worked with just about every self help author and guru that has ever been on Oprah at one time or another.

I accidentally became listed internationally as an expert on school and workplace violence because of two articles I wrote about Colombine, one of which became an internet viral article for awhile.

I even came this close to being on "Be the next food network star."

You can't pigeon hole anyone based on any single aspect of anything, especially a hobby such as brewing....I know ALL ABOUT people trying to pigeon hole me into somebox (especially the one labeled minister) and quite frankly it pisses me off when people do it...

The one thing that I have found is that everyone who homebrews that I have met, no matter what their educational level, or job, or background is, is that they are intensely and insanely passionate about beer, and brewing, and even the one's with the least amount of education, can be very articulate when talking about beer or brewing, and they all seem to get a childish gleam in their eyes when talking about it.

And that's the ONLY thing I've found we have in common...but guess what, that's all we need...Love of beer and brewing seems to melt down walls of differences. And that's one of the reasons I love it.

sounds like you go through hobbys as fast as i do, hahaha.

i guess that would be assuming the typical stereotype, which i dont expect in reality. i just figured posting what people would expect out of a homebrewer would stem some interesting conversation. i do expect to find all types here. oh ya, i am an engineer by day.

Revvy,
You sir are eloquent, articulate and disturbingly right.

Pigeonhole at your own peril and know that someone will make you pay for assumptions.

On a side note, I must confess, I really LOVE my Marzen. Lagers taste SOOOOOOOOOOO goood!

I don't like football or NASCAR. I am treasurer for the Omaha Science Fiction Education Society. I like to cook, sew, and garden but also love to blow things up on the shooting range. I'm very good with a gun but I don't hunt. I am passionate about brewing beer and wine but I don't drink very often. I don't think you can make any assumptions about brewers.

Thanks buddy!

Well I've not been a big lager fan (mostly from too much BMC's) but I'm looking to expand my palate on that side...so I for one would love to know your recipe. :D

Oh and nvr2low, I know you're trying to get to know us and all, and I appreciate it, but we really don't NEED "conversation starter" threads, especially by people WE don't necessarily know yet (I noticed you started another thread on brewing stories, this place is FILLED with those kinda of stories already.)

We really don't need facilitators to spark conversation, you might not have noticed but this is probably the largest and most diverse brewing forums on here as well as the most congenial)...there's already plenty of conversations on here, including threads about what we all do...and what we look like.

If you want to get to know us, and us get to know you...then participate...SHARE YOURSELF rather getting us to share ourselves with a complete stranger...jump into the other discussion and threads, ask questions...see what's already being discussed....Start an introduction thread, but don't come in thinking you need to "encourage us to have a dialog" because we already do...I mean you started a thread asking of brewing stories, without sharing one of yours...same here...you didn't tell us about yourself and how YOU don't fit the stereotype or do...it feels somewhat parasitic to me when someone does that...I wonder of their motivation.

So come on and let us know about you...rather than getting us to tell you about us...we're all over here, our stories, our interests, what makes us tick...so dive in and do the same.

And Welcome by the way!

Revvy, sorry if my post come off offensive or negative in any other way. im a member on about 50 different forums for about 20 different hobbies i have been into over the last couple years and on most forums the best way to get involved is to start posting and making new threads. i have spent roughly the last week reading through these boards and thought it was about time to start posting. i was just looking to get a little insight on assumptions on home brewing here and some interesting laughs on the stories thread. i have read through a bunch of posts but thought maybe a thread with a bunch of interesting stories would be fun to read through instead of searching thread after thread.

sorry if this thread came off negatively, i am now gaining a better feel for HBT.

No problem, but don't try so hard;)...but many of us PREFER that you search and enter in an established thread rather than starting a new on, part of it doesn't have to do with these types of threads so much as the "are my beer ruined" threads we deal with a hundred times a day...5 minutes searching and the poster would easily find the answer to their question answered fifty times.

We are a Huuuge forum and therefore just about every idea has been brought up in one way or another.

My issue (and it is mine) is with the idea of assumptions and stereotypes of every kind...I have to deal with it on a daily basis, especially being single and looking for a partner...as you can see there's many sides to me and to pigeon hole me into any box just doesn't work...I could tell you stories about being a minister and dating (even though I am not actively doing ministry right now, I still AM one)...I've written a couple of Rants on my myspace page about this very topic...

I think they might work...

Or you could just do like some of us and post silly tripe. Then you'll become known as a post-whore, develop a rep and people will just think you were the kid who wore a helmet on the short bus and automatically be nice to you.

Worked for me.:D

And welcome.:mug:

Now here IS a true beer drinking sports fan!!

As well as being quite silly and someone I am proud to call my fellow post whore, and friend. :D

belive me when i say i understand the stereotype/assumption thing, i also hate when its in your face in a negative way. my original post was intended to be more of a light hearted football and homebrew is better than nascar and bud joke than anything else.

back on the stereotype, i worked at a convenient store my last year of high school and a couple years into college as i worked on my electrical engineering degree. i used to get so pissed when dumbasses talked down to me just because i was behind the counter of a gas station. i guess they didnt realize that even though i was behind that counter 35-40 hours a week i was also taking 16-18 credits as well!

This is me blushing.

I will brew again, soon. Got some extra cash laying around. Going to get two started in the next couple of weeks.

Yay for me.

And I hate NASCAR but love football.

now i see where i failed in my attempt. i tired to make a some what interesting light hearted thread, when what i should have done was just post "i like homebrew and my car wont turn left!"

I know that one to a t!!!

I was living in West Palm Beach in 03 with my then fiance and in the process of starting a church in a suburb there. To help pay the bills I worked in a Radio Shack in Boca Raton part time. I can honestly say that I had never been treated so poorly and "servant like" by people down there (especially the "hoity toity" New York retirees and snow birds). Here I was a 40 year old guy with a master's in divinity and pastoring a start up church and being called "boy" by some biddy who wanted someone to change the batteries in her tv remote and didn't want to wait in line like the 5 customers ahead of her...

LOL....Methinks you'll get along fine here then :D

Hey Shecky, I believe we might have a new member of the Posse. :D

He already is well on his way to threadwhore status with 2 threads and 20 posts...He's a 10% for sure....

im trying my hardest, i think i may stick around for a while. i cant make any promises though, i have been know to disappear into the world of a different hobby with no warning. the engineering/science of beer has peaked my interest so i think i will probably be around posting for quite some time!

oh ya, proper into in the intro area for ya!

None of the above. Other than women's volleyball, I can't think of a pro sport worth watching.
