What do you do if your OG is a little short?
Since I only have a 5g BK, I scale the recipe to use some LME, and top off the fermenter with water.
All was going well. Mash wort collected, hit my target (78% efficiency). Boil off, good. This batch had 5 oz of hop pellets. I had over 5 qts of trub left in the pot. I made the mistake of topping up the fermenter with .5 gallon of extra water without thinking of the consequence.
My target OG was 1.055. I ended up at 1.048.
Say screw it and call it a "light" beer? (4.5% abv)
Or pull off 1 gallon and boil off 1/2 gallon?
Will boiling off a small portion for a half hour cause burnt flavor problems?
Next time, How do I get more wort out of the kettle with little trub? Pouring through a strainer clogs it up after about 1 quart. I add whirfloc for last 15 minutes. I whirlpool, and let it chill for 5 hours in the pot. I can't figure out this whirlpooling thing. 4 batches of whirlpooling, and no trub cone on the bottom
