Hello,

I am new to this, so please bear with me. I have just bought myself a starter kit (equipment & a kit). I have a question:

The fermentation bin I have has a snap on lid. When I first put the wort + water + yeast in I presume that there will be quite a bit if pressure built up if the lid is snapped on, do I need to fit an air lock into the lid. also, if there is no air lock in the lid how do I know when fermentation is finished?

TIA for your help.

Richard

This should be in the beginners section, but...

When I ferment in a bucket, I have it fitted with an airlock ( I have lots of headspace) and by watching the airlock activity and the passage of enough time, I judge when to take gravity readings. Gravity readings tell me when my brew is done for the most part.

You need to have an airlock fitted to the lid. I think your vendor made a mistake not providing one in the kit.
