What's with the black bows in avatars?

I've seen several avatars in the past few days that have been altered. The alteration is a black bow on the heads of the people in the avatar. I'm just curious if that's intentional and if so, what's the significance? If it's not intentional, is that a hacker's clever joke?

I'm not trying to offend anyone if it is intentional, but if it's not, it could be someone messing around with the site without authorization....
