Does headspace in a secondary fermenter cause a problem? To me it seems like this space will fill up with a CO2 blanket almost immediately. Just curious if I can use a 6 gal carboy for a secondary.

I've got a chance to pick up a couple cheap. (After I already spent too much on a new one.)

There was an almost heated discussion here about that very issue a couple of weeks ago. Some were with you on the CO2 blanket theory, others felt that there is not that much CO2 still being produced in a secondary. Personally, it seems to me that if there is any bubble activity at all, then there's at least enough CO2 to cover the beer. JMHO

The only thing I've ever used is 6.5 gallon for both primary and secondary. Never had a problem.
