  • Posted in thread: Old Ale with Smoked Malt? on 10-11-2014 at 11:58 PM
I actually brewed my old ale with 1lb cherrywood smoked one month ago. Tasted awesome when I
moved it to the secondary. I'll keep you posted, but I agree that it should just add to the
    malt complexity...

  • Posted in thread: Does brewtoad make anyone else want to shoot themselves in the face? on 01-31-2014 at 02:07 PM
Glad I'm not alone on the brewtoad thoughts. I have to use Brew Target in conjunction with
brewtoad to get anywhere. Brewtoad is beautiful though...I think a monkey came up with their

    dropped to...

  • Posted in thread: Brewing, collecting data, and the art of making better beer on 01-29-2014 at 06:27 PM
    (1) I have much higher rates of mediocre or bad beer when I repitch yeast. (2) I have noted
several batches as unbalanced or where hops have a strong almost salty presence in the finished
    beer. These ...

  • Posted in thread: How many times opening the fermenter is too much? on 01-24-2014 at 08:43 PM
Refractometers are only accurate prior to fermentation. After that, it's all hydrometer.
proven to be accurate for me, YMMV I guess. I always have a hydrometer as a backup, haven't
    really touched it ...

What do you use to pull a sample? The hole for my airlock is only 3/8", then the grommet takes
up some of that diameter. So you sample with a straw or something? This method would only really
    work if y...

  • Posted in thread: If you had $2,000 to upgrade your brewery, what would you do? (help me upgrade mine) on 01-24-2014 at 06:15 PM
I'd start with a brewstand like this: ($125) get some new kettles for a HLT and MLT: ($500)
I'd just use your current BK and burner and treat this all as a three tier gravity system. Not
    automated, ...
