  • Posted in thread: Stuck fermentation in a conical fermenter on 05-13-2013 at 05:51 PM
We always used an oxygen tank and stone to get O2 levels up before pitching and have had good
results with both ales and lagers, assuming we had properly spun up our yeast to the right
    pitching rates....

  • Posted in thread: Pictures or advice for a 1 to 1.5 barrel system? on 05-13-2013 at 05:42 PM
My brew buds and I built 25-gal all-electric systems, using theelectricbrewery.com and other
sources as inspiration. Then upgraded that to 55-gal, allowing us to do 1-barrel batches. Its a
    sweet syste...

I have a similar arrangement, and I typically set my fridge to ~64-66, not worrying about the
exothermic component.I figure the fridge will keep up with that for the most part, and if it
    doesn't, I'm ...

For the question: "am I losing some flavor too by using less base malt? Does anybody know?
Whats the downside to this increased efficiency?"If you hit target gravity you are golden. The
    thing to focus...

  • Posted in thread: Beersmith Efficiency Calculations on 10-18-2012 at 12:23 AM
good post above. One adjustment I'd make is that brewhouse efficiency takes into account all
losses....from beer left behind in hoses, beer left behind in your brew kettle, beer spilled on
    the floor, ...

  • Posted in thread: putting together a spreadsheet on 10-17-2012 at 11:42 PM
I created a spreadsheet based on the info from "Designing Great Beers". It has worked well for
me.You start by entering your target volume and gravity, so it calculates total GU's.Then enter
    your effi...

I just brewed a nice Alt beer that went from mash to glass in 10 days. I never rush my beers,
and intended to secondary this, maybe cold crash it, etc.But I took a reading after 10 days and
    it had dro...

+1 for what TNGabe said....that being said, if you want to understand how to nail your expected
target gravity nearly every time, (with a bit of practice/knowledge of your system) read
    "Designing Grea...

My understanding is that it is not good to over-mill your grain. I've always just run it
through the mill one time, and get 80% efficiency if I'm doing a 6-gallon batch, and over 85%
    if I'm doing 15 g...

Swapped from ProMash to BeerSmith this year - like going from a...a thing that's barely
mediocre to another thing that's really, really good. :-)The Cloud thing with ingredients and
    recipes is great, ...
