It was a two part question, but it was indeed about the same mead. I used raspberries because,
well, that's sorta what my niece is into at the moment (they're here favorite fruit).Ok, so it
    definitely...

So I read (on this forum) about this guy making a batch of mead for each of his kids the day
after they were born, and thought that sounded pretty badass. I've done several batches of
    mead, so I'm goo...

Yup, cold crashing pretty much always sends them diving. It's not too hard to just avoid them
with the racking cane, though, if you don't want to/can't cold crash.

That looks good to me, though next time I'd make a bit larger starter. And no, you don't need
to do anything to it if you're brewing in the next couple hours. When you're read to pitch,

Just take the small sample you have and step it up. Use a starter wort of 1.030-1.040 and make

I'd guess a lot of cells burst and viability is probably pretty low. You can try making a
starter with it and see if it goes or not.+1 for sure. I've done this a few times before and it
    can always be ...

Just made my 1st made yeast starter, I used 4cups of water to 1cup of DME.Not to be nitpicky,
but how did you end up with only the 800ml of starter in your first picture with 4 cups of
    water and a cup...

I tasted the beer 2 days ago and it was fine. You're good. Lots of yeasts (especially 05) leave
floating barf-like chunks of gobby disgustingness when done.

I suppose my dense mind is still not getting this - why would putting the racking cane such
that the inlet point is just above the trub not suck up all the beer until it was level with
    the inlet point...
