I have no source to give you, but a while ago I did some general research to see if there was
any risk to create methanol while distilling or brewing at home. The general conclusion was that
    methanol i...

When I started homebrewing about 3 years ago, one of the first brew I made was a mead. I used a
dry wine yeast and enough honey to give me around 10% alcohol. 2 weeks after bottling, I tried
    to drink ...

One time I dropped an army knife with dirt on it in the primary before fermentation. I don't
remember what I was doing with the knife, but it still got his way into the bucket. The beer
    was great.

    sides. It cou...

Two years ago I had a contaminated batch. It didn't smell that bad, but the taste was vomit,
literally. I had to run to the bathroom to spit it out. The problem was that I was fermenting
    in a bucket f...

There is a lot of thing that can influence efficiency. Mashing at a wrong temperature, sparging
at the wrong temperature or without enough water (I fly-sparge by the way), not crushing the
    grains enou...

Before, I couldn't get over 60-65% efficiency. Sometimes I would even have around 50%. So I
bought a mill and crushed my barley myself (instead of crushing it at the store). Now I always
    get over 75%.

  • Posted in thread: Mash temperature stabilization on 06-13-2010 at 06:52 PM
Personally I dont care about numbers. I heat my water to around 180 degree, then mix with the
grain. I adjust the temperature with cold water until I get the mashing temperature I want.It
    always works...

I had a contaminated beer only once. I tasted it when racking to secondary. It was smelling
like vomit and tasting the same. The moment I had it in my mouth I knew it was contaminated
    because I had al...
