    ABOUT ME

  • Nashville
  • Doug
  • It all started when three friends convinced me to help them brew beer on June 7, 2008. The beer, brewed using an English Pale Ale extract kit, turned out to be quite good. Fast forward to March 28, 2009, when I ran into an acquaintance at a party and found out he's a homebrewer. We all joined forces a couple of weeks later, added another friend of mine from elementary school, and became The Hoplings. Sparked by Charlie Papazian's "The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing," I've developed an insatiable thirst for info about beers and the brewing process. I've also put on about 10 pounds.

I'm in Nashville. Welcome. I haven't joined up with a club so I can't comment on that but I
love Rebel Brewer for supplies. (All Seasons has been fine too but they're more pricey.) As for

double_e5: I think that is exactly what happened. I recently picked up a scale so next time
I'll be doing it by weight for sure.To follow up, I moved the yeast starter to a warmer part of

Yes, the potential alcohol scale read close to 8% and the balling scale was around 15. Thanks
for checking though. I appreciate the helpfulness.

FlySpargeVorlauf: We cooled the wort down to 70F, but we were using a brand new thermometer
(uncalibrated... let's face it, this is turning into an embarrassing calamity of errors) so I
    suppose it cou...

Just took delivery of my kegging setup and will be getting my CO2 tank filled tomorrow. I have
been reading tons of very helpful threads about CO2 and racking beer and purging, etc., but I

I did forget to mention that when we transferred the cool wort from the pot to the growler via
a funnel, we went a little too fast and some of the wort foamed over from the growler. So we
