As IslandLizard, I've seen a white-beige gooey ring after the boil.. I would not consider is
scorching though.I have used mine only 3 times, with barley malt only.

It is very difficult to identify hops from the look, but Cascades are usually long and skinny
cones..These don't look like cascades... Anyways, if they smell good use 'em!
