    ABOUT ME

  • I got into home brewing after my Grandmother died. In a back bedroom at her house, we discovered two bottles of my Grampa's wine -- Strawberry and Sugar Plum. Mind you, Grampa died in 1987, when I was 11. I grew up hearing about his wine but knowing I would never get to drink it. Upon discovering these two bottles, I went crazy with anticipation. I was hoping beyond hope that they would be palatable still, but one was bottle in 1968, and the other 1971, so I didn't hold out too much hope. After Granny's memorial, at the family get together, we cracked open the two bottles. Not only were they still palatable, they were DELICIOUS! Absolutely amazing. And very potent -- my sister-in-law, the wine expert, estimated them at 15-17%. It was enough that two bottles got several of us quite drunk. Afterwards, I was inspired to make my own wine, to see if I could possibly equal the awesomeness of my Grampa's wine. Probably not, but I'm going to give it a shot. My Mom said that Grampa

I made this recipe a year ago. The yeast stalled out at ~1.010, so I didn't sorbate and
backsweeten. Well it looks like the yeast fermented a little bit in the bottle -- not blowing
    any corks, thankfu...

You stir the must of a fruit wine because that keeps the floating fruit wet. If the tops of
floating blueberries dry out, they could potentially rot or mold.Anyways, I made my 2nd batch
    of this severa...

Got a batch of this aging now... at it's last racking I gave it a taste, it's crazy good. It
stalled out at 1.010, right where I like it. Might bottle it in a few months if I can stand it
    that long!

    was yet another batch of Apfelwein! 23,220 + 6 = 23,226.

I ferment everything at 75F. Some yeasts don't mind it higher or lower, but all the ones I use
    like it at 75.

Yeah, I was impatient and rushed my first few batches. My first mead was in 2ndary maybe 2
months. I bottled it when it was clear. Still came out really tasty. It's a year old now, we
    cracked a bottle...
