I've been using a 5 gallon paint strainer with no problems for a while now. If you have a good
rolling boil, you should get good utilization if they are submerged.

I wouldn't have racked that...it still fermenting! That's krausen and that tells you everything
is going fine. Did you check gravity? Racking to secondary is when your fermentation is winding

Congrats on your first brew!:mug: As far as the vodka/water getting sucked in, don't worry
about it. If anything it will give your brew a little kick, but probably not much.
