  • Started when living in Christchurch, New Zealand '06-'07 w/a "Mac's Gold" kit. Had to use an electric blanket to keep my fermentations warm enough in chilly New Zealand houses. Ended up leaving my starter kit over there when I moved back to the States just to buy it all over again! Now moving into a whole grain setup. Just scored some kegs to convert into a kettle and lauter tun. Almost in business!

2008 results are in... 11 batches brewed!

  • Posted in thread: Brew automation - solenoid vs. motorized ball valves on 09-14-2013 at 01:10 AM
Seems this valve is rated to 90C or 194F. Anyone using it had any problems with running fresh
boiled wort? I imagine the wort will only be above 194F for a short time after flame out (even
    more so for...

I'm curious to see how yours turned out. Its been about a year since I brewed my "Franken
Cider" and I'll be popping the cap on one next week to try it. We'll see how funky it is after
    a year of aging...

  • Posted in thread: PEX for a MT manifold?? on 06-06-2010 at 03:53 PM
I tried and it was a pain in the butt to work with. (I was trying to keep it dryfitted for ease
of cleaning.) I started a thread on it here: the end I went with a 1/2" copper tubing
    manifold. It was...

  • Posted in thread: Rice hulls question on 05-24-2010 at 04:20 AM
Come to think of it , a stuck sparge is indicative of not setting up an porous filter bed with
your grain. A dough ball is indicative of not mixing water into grain adequately enough to wet
    all grain ...

  • Posted in thread: Rice hulls question on 05-24-2010 at 03:51 AM
Doesn't everyone mix the grain when they drop the mash to avoid any dough balls, it should not
make a difference where you place the rice hulls. It is going to get mixed in anyways.Depends
    how well yo...

  • Posted in thread: Rice hulls question on 05-22-2010 at 06:49 PM
Mix them in. The point of using rice hulls is because some grains (like wheat) are lacking a
husk. Its difficult to set up a filter bed when sparging without a husk because the grain bed
    compacts. Ric...
