    ABOUT ME

  • Edmonton
  • Brewing,obviously. Drinking too.
  • Student
  • Roger
  • Heavy Metal
  • Introduced to homebrew by my father, who's been brewing off and on for many years, and invented an excellent recipe for spruce beer, using spruce buds collected during the spring. He recently gave me all of his old equipment: a plastic carboy with airlock, a plastic bucket-style open fermenter, a 5 gallon pot, etc etc etc. Don't have appropriate equipment for all-grain brewing yet (as I discovered when attempting to brew my scotch ale), but someday.
  • My next project will be a partial mash chocolate ale using chocolate malt, cocoa, and probably amber malt extract.
  • All-grain scotch ale...my first all-grain brew, not turning out so well, but we'll see.
  • Simple dark ale. OG 1.070, FG 1.021. Gravity values are a little higher than I'd expected, but I think it'll turn out.

I've just remembered the other day that I brewed up a sortof ESB-like brew, 6 months ago. It's
been sitting in primary ever since. I'm wondering if there are any indications of yeast
    autolysis (I've h...

I'm having a tough time identifying the styles/types of Unibroue's beers...anyone got any
ideas? I admit that I'm not a tremendously experienced beer taster, especially when it comes to
    belgian-style ...

I brewed this up last night. Everything went fairly well, and it smelled heavenly during the
boil. Since my hydrometer broke, I can't give any SG readings, but I'd guess around 1.060-1.070
    OG. It appe...

My current thought is that there's something to do with the plastic fermenters contributing
    that flavour....but time will tell.

I'm having this same issue, every beer I brew has that funky ripe fruity taste and aroma. Up to
now, I've been brewing exclusively in a plastic bucket and plastic carboy, but I brewed a batch
    last nig...

    Thanks ChshreCat.

I've been wondering, how should I calculate the amount of grain to use based on an all-extract
recipe? For instance, if the recipe calls for 8 lbs extract, how many pounds of grain would I
    use instead...
