    I may be new here, but the only common denominator I see is a carboy that is only 1 gallon
    larger then your brew.If a carboy is a must for you, get a larger one.

    If you're going to measure gravity, then definitely stir the wort before pulling you sample.
    Otherwise it could have a gradient that would give a mis-reading and possibly cause some angst.
