    Looks like it is closed with the thermostat removed to me.Again, pics are hard to tell.

    Hard to tell from the pics, but is that a mechanical damper above the thermostat? Maybe it's
    just a mechanical unit that opens the damper if the temp rises above set point?

    Many of the smaller ones that I saw when I was shopping, also had compressor humps on the
    bottom that limit what you can actually fit down there. I also know that in my 20 cu. ft.

    I built mine with 5/16" line to the keg. And as camiller mentioned above, it's how most of them
    are built.I also use beergas (75% nitrogen 25% co2) to push through the jockey box at the

    I'm not opposed to removing the beer from the barrel and aging it in carboys either. I could
    always get the bourbon oak from cubes or spirals down the road...Say I did that though, would a
