  • My wife and son watched a 'How's its made' TV show and thought it was something that I might like. They tivo'd the show for me and I finally got around to watching it a few weeks later. I quickly found this forum, did a bunch a research and brewed my first extract in Jan, 2009. The beer sucked but it didn't stop me from wanting to brew more. Now, its a hobby that I thoroughly enjoy. Every batch since the first one has been great, with each one getting better. Its a great hobby to have - little bit of science and sort of challenging to understand everything and make a variety of great brews.

Did you happen to notice the date on the yeast package? If the yeast is 2+ months old, it might
take a while to get rolling. I've had plenty of slow take-offs and they always end up fine.

Chickypad, Good idea but I appear to be within the limits.I used Wyeast, Belgian Witbier, 3944.
My ABV is just over 9%. Here is the information on the yeast on their web site.Temperature

  • Posted in thread: What are you doing with your unused priming sugar? on 08-25-2014 at 10:23 AM
I just did the grape juice experiment and let me tell you it is GREAT. It was mainly for the
wife....to get her involved. She is loving it very much. I made her decide on how much sugar to

Go to the grocery store and buy 5 jugs of either apple juice or grape juice. Pour your choice
into a bucket, add 5 of your sugar packets, two packs of (yes) bakers yeast and stick an air
    lock on it. I...

I brewed a Belgium Triple recently and split the batch (2 x 2.5 gallons), one with Trappist
yeast and one with Witbier to experiment with the yeast. I bottled both batches and equaly
    split the priming...

  • Posted in thread: Grain crusher on 08-24-2014 at 01:06 PM
I got my own crusher mainly since I wanted to be able to control the crush and keep
consistency. You can also adjust if needed if you are doing BIAB vs. batch sparging, etc.
    However, make sure you get...

  • Posted in thread: Final gravity always 1.010 on 08-24-2014 at 12:21 PM
Sounds strange since each will have unique gravity with different yeast attenuation. Therefore,
a consistent 1.010 FG doesn't appear correct. Is you hydrometer calibrated correctly? Are
    reading it cor...

I've used online vendors in the past - austin, More, Brewmasters. Ingredients were always
great. However, shipping was sort of an unknown as I live in NE and a day or two delay could be
    devastating if...
