Happened to me a few times. It most likely occurs when an air pocket develops. You got lucky
that the element didn't scorch and pop. I ended up laying a SS broccoli colander/strainer over
the element ...

Definitely tried it and it works but you have to be careful to keep the bag off the element
because it can create air pockets and pop and scorch the element. Did that a few times way back
