    ABOUT ME

  • I'm a geek of many sorts. I give a shit about the environment. I'm a scientist with an interest in freshwater ecology, specifically aquatic insects and other macroinvertebrates. Oh yeah, I love a good beer. I like putting beers back, both with friends and in the cellar (I actually have a real cellar (two actually, but I'm not using either for beer purposes currently). I currently have my "cellar" spread across three states...it makes consuming it much harder, which is very conducive to long-term aging.

  • oldschool and myself decided we needed to start brewing beer. This was originally because of the cost of the kind of beer we liked to drink....not macro-swill by any means. Well, in the summer of 2009, we decided to hop into brewing by going the Midwest kit route. We ordered two extract kits: Porter and Fat Tire clone (Flat Tire, lol). I just wish I had gotten into it a long time ago, rather than just talked about it...story of so many lives. Carpe diem!
  • Everything....hopefully that isn't being too presumptuous, lol.

I may be wrong, but I think the limit for a "microbrewery" is 15k bbl. Between that and 6
million bbl is considered a "regional craft brewery". The upper limit was 2 million, but Boston

It really pisses me off when breweries don't label bottles stating the bottling date or batch
number. Over the last year, I've been moving away from buying beer that doesn't keep the
    consumer's enjoym...

A few weeks ago I bottled ~ 2.5 gallons of a Chocolate Oatmeal Stout. I don't have the notes in
front of me, but I added various amounts of oats to about half of the batch, just like I had

In the name of science I will sacrifice a half keg and dry oat it. I will toss in 4 oz of oats
tomorrow into ~2 gal.I'm assuming you did the math and 5 oats/bottle equates to 4oz/~2 gal? I
