  • I had been asked by so many people who knew of my love for beer if I brewed my own, then I'd hear them tell a story about this friend of theirs who brewed, bla bla bla. I never looked in to how it was done, I just assumed it took a lot of work/time/money and I figured the results were probably mediocre at best, but one day I was watching my favorite food network show, Good Eats, and Alton Brown made beer. I thought "hey I can do that". The only problem was that I lived in a barracks and I couldn't do it there. Solution: I bought an entire extract brewing setup for my dad's birthday in January '08. I went home almost every weekend and we brewed together. It just snowballed from there.

Mostly because this thread is from '09 and it opened in Oct 2010. Thanks for bringing up a good
    memory though!

I am hesitantly pleased to announce that after a few cycles of PBW soak, wait an hour, purge,
soak, wait an hour, etc, I have seen nothing but clean solution coming out. Either I did a
    really good job...

And wouldn't you know it, I went to recal my refractometer now...Hydrometer read 1.037 @
84.5*F, corrected to 1.036. Refracto read 9.0 Brix which gives a brix correction factor of
    1.00000 according to...

I am prepping for my first brew in 10 months. I expect to make some mistakes and run into some
speed bumps, so I'm doing most of the prep a day in advance. One thing I decided to do is check
    the calib...

After doing some reading I am going to switch to PBW as it apparently is superior at breaking
up the type of organic crud that I am bound to encounter.

  • Posted in thread: Is PBW the same as Oxyclean on 02-12-2012 at 09:15 PM
this stinks of pure guerilla marketing by the makers of PBW. why wouldn’t he just mention the
name of the product? Because advertisers are taught to be vague when they could be sued!He even
    has a TEST...

AZ, what kind of hose do you have? I know some people used a more heat resistant rubber hose
but I went with the cheap-o vinyl one. I might consider rigging up a gravity feed for a good
    hot cleaning. ...

What works for me (*crosses fingers*); I store it full of water and use those small red caps
that fit on 3/8" copper pipe. While I'm heating the sparge water, I heat an extra couple of
    gallons, and whi...

Hey all, it has been quite a while since I posted or even read anything here, mostly because it
has been quite a while since I brewed anything! About 10 months to be precise, but it is time

My latest batch of IPA has a problem that a few of my past batches have faced as well. I dry
hopped it in the keg using 2oz simcoe pellets in a mesh hop bag for 10 days at 68*F. It now has
    a very fine...

I just graduated from JMU and am heading into the Coast Guard. My end goal is flight school also but for the Coasties obviously. Did you go to USNA? If so, do you know Anthony Parker?
