  • Holy ^*$&..my bio was way outta date... I brewed by first batch in 1994 and brewed reasonably regularly for a few years. I got out of it due to life (married, buying a house, etc.) and then got super serious back into it about 8-9 years ago. Went way off the deep end, ended up with a 45 gallon single tier herms system in my garage, member of the local homebrew club, and then... in January of 2012, I was one of those stupid enough to actually open a commercial brewery. The money sucks and it won't get you chics... but at least the hours are long! Nah... it's been a freakin blast every step of the way.

I think we agree at the core of it. I hope I'm not splitting hairs, from your perspective. I
took issue with your context, not your example. Getting someone to try new beer styles is
    great. Getting so...

I know we're not arguing, but that is completely illogical. The risk was serving something he
didn't like. Good for you on getting him to try it (getting people to try new beer is one of
    the best part...

I think there two main points...1) what does it all currently mean and2) is there a way we can
all, collectively, do a better job of it. I think of we can do a better job of it, it would
    help craft be...

As I'm typing and thinking about it... maybe that's the question... can you have a beautifully
made beer that is "bad"?I think I would argue "no". If it is made perfectly, then I would argue
    that "you...

yes but you can't have it both ways.either you're asking for what aj describes, a strict set of
criteria which beer is to be measured, or you're asking people for their feelings..I
    disagree... Only be...

But a brewer could modify their stated 'intent' after the beer is actually brewed, similar to
how a homebrewer could submit a 'bad' IPA (original intent) into the BJCP American Amber
    category (actual ...

Seriously? Pick your imperfect poison: GABF, World Beer Cup, BJCP, CAMRAAgain... that's why I
continuously go back to brewer's intent. I don't think it is a perfect solution by any stretch
    but I don't...

  • Posted in thread: What does "good beer" mean? on 02-09-2016 at 09:29 PM
Not really. Taste is subjective. BJCP judges get together and skew their own personal results
in order to come to a more common score. Lots of people have told me that Bell's Hopslam is one
    of the bes...

It very certainly is if popularity is the criterion of optimality and that seems like a very
acceptable criterion to me. It's certainly as valid as some of the others. The guy who says beer

Sure. Obviously there's no denying that the BJCP is a fairly matured organization and a
moderately successful attempt at some sort of standardization. But to say:"I should also stress
    that I'm mostly t...
