  • I started brewing in 1982 when a friend told me it was a good idea. The first batch was inspired by Mother Earth News and used crappy extract with old brown hops and dry yeast from a health food store (it was Oklahoma in the '80s, what can I say). The batch was passable enough to cause me to make another one and three or so batches later I was going all-grain.

I co-founded the Rio Grande Brewing company where I served as head-brewer. It was a bottling micro that is still in operation but under different ownership. We had limited success, but did win two GABF medals along the way.

I am now very happy simply homebrewing, although my system is a bit over the top. I continue to upgrade and renovate my system and recognise I am a certified gadget junkie.

I tend to brew strong beers, and have been in a stout rut of late. Because of a new jacketed conical I have recently had built I am ready to dive into the world of lagers once again, but don't know where that will lead.
  • Nothing but dead air and dust.
  • I don't use no stinkin' secondary.
  • Strong beer.
  • Everything else (see above).

I re-configured it to work without a steam generator. It works a bit like a pressure cooker.
The jacket has some water in it, and there is a pressure relief valve for safety. A burner is

The kettle on the right is 60 gallon. The MLT is 40.The rig has a 2 zone chiller that uses
glycol to chill water that runs through an immersion chiller/whirlpool.

They are. I got them from a university in Oklahoma for a song. The larger one has been altered
and now is direct fire, but the one in the middle, which is the MLT is still steam heated.

So, I am 99% done with my rebuild with only one barb fitting on the chiller to replace. I can't
wait to fire it up and make some beer. In the picture the system is set up for the chilling
    whirlpool. :...

He who drinks beer gets drunk.

He who gets drunk goes to sleep.

He who sleeps does not sin.

So lets drink and go to heaven!!!
