Actually, on second thought you're right, monitoring the temp at the outlet of the HERMS coil
is likely the best option. It *is* the temp that matters.

I suppose theoretically you should be able to run at about .5 quarts per minute assuming 55F
tap water coming in.That's about half the speed I'd like, but I'll typically be using warmer
water than 55F...
