Thanks for the replies I went and picked up a winexpert italian montepulciano for my first run,
I was between that and the amarone, local brew store doesn't have a huge selection in the wine

If I had to guess I'd say they add sulfites as a preservative. This is also common in red wine,
and gives a nasty headache to those sensitive to it.
