    ABOUT ME

  • South Dakota
  • Began brewing my first batch of beer (Cooper's IPA) on October 24, 2008!
  • Brewing,Collectable Firearms
  • Civil Air Patrol, & just joined local beer club
  • Watched a video on the history channel about the history of beer. I got extrememly excited. I learned how easy it really was, and how I could go extremely advanced with the same kit. I've nearly read all of Papazian's Complete Joy of Homebrewing, 3rd Ed., except for some of the recipies. -- About 3 years ago, I began trying other beers than BL, Miller, and Coors. I began to learn there was beer to enjoy, and not just drink. Since then, I've tried many dark beers. I feel that us in the US, and maybe even more here in the 'midwest' part of the US, we are truely deprived of good beer choices.
  • Doing Cooper's IPA at the moment. Next, a batch of wine for the wife. Then, I have a Cooper's European Lager next. -- Still trying to acquire beer bottles!
  • I live in a really small apt. at the moment. I do look forward to Kegging someday.

I had a 5 min, half-oz Willamette hop addition. I'm dry-hopping an oz of cascade. Because of
the extra boil, should I dry hop both cascade and the other half oz of willamette? Or is
    Willamette not a g...

Thanks guys for the responses! I just started to see a little activity in the airlock... so,
maybe I jumped the gun here a little.... We'll see what happens the rest of the evening. I
    should practice ...

Would you say it's important to rack off the current sediment/old yeast and then pitch new
yeast, or just pitch new yeast?

With the extremely cold ground water, I was able to cool the wort down below 80 degrees both
times, I believe. The yeast cake was exactly 4 weeks old. -- I oxiginated the first 2 gallons
    really well, ...

I think I have two questions. This was my third all-grain recipe. (10 extract before that) I
have been having problems with losing too much in my boil, so I tamed it back a bit this time,
    and I didn't...

I used: and I typed in both the large recipe, and the one I calculated it down, and I guess
    it came out right.

So I have a 15.5 barrel recipe that I'd like to shrink down. I divided it straight down to a
5.5 gallon batch, but it came to seem like a lot of grain, close to 16lb total, and less than
    4oz of total ...

Thanks - as you can tell, I have a lot to learn!

I'm new to AG, but why would you want plain "top off" water? If you have more room for water,
why wouldn't you add it to the sparge, and use it to help extract the last of the sugars from
    the grains? ...

    Is this all that's needed?
