  • I've been brewing off and on for about 8 years, but I've been brewing a batch every 4 weeks for the last 2 years or so. Just started all-grain brewing finally in June 2012. This has been my goal for a long time; to drink 90-95% homebrew. Saves a lot of money (well, if you're just talking ingredients, I try not to think about the equipment investments I've made) but more importantly it is incredibly satisfying to create my own beer. Beers that I feel measure up to quality beers you find at the store. I'm also getting into mead making, with 4 separate gallons so far.

Well I'm not sure exactly how long it took, but I had a nice layer of foam in the fermenter
this morning. So, well under 20 hours for the yeast to get going. I'd say the night before
    works well enough...

Just brewed this one today. First time using WLP029, doing a 90 minute boil, and using German
pils malt as well. Hit 1.050. Looking forward to tasting this one. Outside of my IPA/stout
    comfort zone, b...

Cool, I feel reassured. The concept behind that vitality starter is pretty much what I what
thinking. As long as I get the yeast active before pitching into 5 gallons of wort, that's a
    lot better than...

...and I'm brewing in 12 hours. Oh well. I'm making the starter now. Just a small one to get it
rolling. Hopefully it works out okay. WLP029. Shooting for 1.050.

Brewing a modified version of this as I type. I'm lowering the OG and FG for my tastes. I feel
like 1.020 is high, but maybe the real beer does finish high. In any case, I'm using the

I made my first batch way back in January. I followed the recipe 95% as written. My only change
was that I peeled the orange and used the strips of zest, and I only added the juice, not the
