I got a sodium level of about 75. That's pretty high.KaiHah, that's nothin'! My tap water

Maybe a noob question, but why is it ok to let a starter have contact with air, but in
fermenter an airlock is used? Seems like contamination risks are the same ?It's not about
    contamination. With a s...

in it???? Umm, actually, I did. ;)Me: "So how about an empty 3 piece airlock? That would seem

Sure, I do it. Although I guess the jury's still out on my success as my first is still carbing
in bottles. :DAs long as you're able to monitor it often enough to keep the temp within the
    tight range ...

The "theif" is great though... your hydrometer fits right in it and it's easy to sanitize.
Maybe not necessary, but there's a lot of unnecessary stuff that is just handy... especially
    for beginners th...

Since you mentioned that you have a bucket for a fermenter, take the lid off, sanitize
something (turkey baster works, wine thief works, measuring cup works, coffee cup works) to
    remove a sample for t...

I think you can salvage the rack. Use a razor blade to scrap off as much plastic as you can
then put it through a self cleaning cycle.Sure, that could work. But I would NOT want to be in
    that house du...
