I bought a block of barrel wax (paraffin) from the LBS and basically smeared it all over the
staves. Then take a torch and just heat the wax to melt it working top to bottom and let cool.

I don't think that the oak chips are necessary. The reason I added them was because I had read
in Wild Brews that brettanomyces can actually consume sugars that are in the oak. I'm not sure
