Picked up one of the FF a week ago and put it together for a leak test. The union fitting leaks
like crazy. I took the knob off and tightened the internal valve but that didn't help at all.

Don't sand the top until you verify you need to. If the top most surface ring is noticeably
smoother than the rest of the fermenter and very flat, then you you have a newer version that
won't need it.
