MDF wouldn't absorb more poly than a normal piece of plywood? Seems surprising, but I've never
tried it.I may be guilty of laying down more of a winter coat than a windbreaker ...

So how big was the free pool? Was it one of those fiberglass drop-ins or was it a Mr Turtle
