Good stuff. Thanks guys. I'll go with the 1.063 and make sure to mix a bit before reading after
    cooling.

So do you think the 1.072 reading post boil was a fluke?

  • Posted in thread: Pre boil vs post boil on 11-03-2013 at 07:19 PM
UPDATE24 hours in and I took a new reading: 1.051 with Hydrometer and 1.060 with refractometer.
Which do I read? Is this my OG or just coming down to my FG?

Are your measuring instruments calibrated? Refractometer or hydrometer? Did you correct your
gravity measurements for temperature. There was user error somewhere along the line unless you

I'm brewing a small batch of a Winter Warmer using Wyeast 1099 Whitbread Ale. It'll be my first
time brewing with Wyeast. The total batch size should be between 2-3 gallons. I have the yeast
    now and p...

If you correct the reading for the presence of alcohol (the corrected value would be about
1.020) you get a bit higher of an abv (~3.6). Ideally you'd use a hydrometer for the finishing
    gravity.Do you...
