You might be able to rent a 6" carbide hole saw from a local tool rental company. That should
greatly reduce your chance of shattering the block.

The only thing that I can contribute is that last year my dog completely ignored my hop plant.
And in previous years, my last dog also ignored them. YMMV, and since you don't want your
mileage to vary...
