I have a 100W lightbulb in a GE chest freezer that easily keeps 3 kegs at 10C even when it's
below 0C outside. I think it depends on your insulation.

I didn't think so, but that begs the question - why do we bother with the airlock then?Good
question. I personally think that airlocks are pointless for brewing beer (except for maybe for
    bulk aging, ...

Buy a glass thermometer and make it your standard. You might prefer using digital units but you
have to have something to check them against. Glass thermometers, regardless of accuracy, never
    drift. I...

  • Posted in thread: Why check for complete fermentation? on 12-01-2013 at 04:05 AM
If I take a gravity reading after pitching, it's just so I have a final gravity to write in my
journal. I let my beers settle for at least a week or two after signs of fermentation are over.
    What's th...

It has plenty of head space, but corny keg lids always leak when unpressurized. At least mine
    all do.

Same way you would if you were starting out with out an airstone. Put a spoon in the bucket and
splash around. Are you using a spundig valve to release the fermentation pressure building up in
    the keg,...

So if you aerate after cooling, how do you do it? I guess what I'm getting at is I no-chill in
a corny keg. Then I want to just pitch yeast into the same keg and use it as a fermenter after
    the wort c...

After boiling, there is almost no oxygen in wort. Also, you are not supposed to aerate hot
wort. So, what do no-chillers do about wort oxygenation? Do you just not aerate, then RDWHAHB?

  • Posted in thread: Why are contactors 24VAC? on 11-21-2013 at 02:25 AM
Grainger doesn't even have a category on their site for 24VDC coil voltage. The only choices
are 24VAC and 120VAC. It wasn't a question of whether DC contactors exist, but why 24VAC is so
    popular. Is ...

  • Posted in thread: Why are contactors 24VAC? on 11-21-2013 at 02:00 AM
All the 2-pole, 30A contactors I can find at Grainger are 24VAC. I would prefer 12 or 24 volts
DC so I can use a common swithmode wall plug to get the DC and not have to mess with a
    transformer. What ...
