There could be a small difference I suppose, but it is more likely due to different
storage/shipping conditions. If one is older or has been stored warmer it is going to taste

How about an automatic temperature correcting refractometer? It's what I and many others use.
Only $30, well worth the price once you realize how fragile hydrometers are.

That's a fairly "traditional" method for some styles of beer, though. An Eisbock comes to mind.
