Hello,

I'm Alan from the Pittsburgh area of Western Pennsylvania. I have never brewed beer but I want to learn how.. What is the first thing I need to know and what equipment will I need to start out.

Welcome aboard! Walker's link there will get you plenty of information to get started on, and is a great reference to go back to time and time again.
 
If you can find a specialty shop that sells brewing stuff, you are in luck. Chat with the person who runs the place. He or she will be able to do some show and tell about your options and give you some tips on getting started.
