I just did my 2nd brew of a kit beer. This one was a Robust Ultimate Porter. It came with 8lbs of malt extract and a load of seeping grains. I topped up the fermenter to 5gal and stole a sample for my sample jar. The OG was 1.088. That sounds awful high since my last brew had a OG of 1.042. The wort tasted nicely sweet and a little hoppy - maybe around mid June I can enjoy it :p

Only one problem, how do you keep the grommet from dropping into the fermenter? This is the 2nd time this happened to me. When I insert the bubbler it pushes in the grommet. Good thing I have several of them!

I couldn't believe the OG reading so I tossed that sample and got another. It came in at 1.058 which is what it should have gotten - I feel better about that now.

I always make sure the tip of the bubbler and grommet are wet before trying to push it down in. I usually twist it back and forth slowly and it goes all the way in without the grommet moving. If yours keeps doing it, replace the grommet.

That's funny - I have replaced it twice. Each one fell into the wort and I didn't find the first one and I am not digging in this batch for that one. I did sanitize it good just in case it fell in - which it did.
