I owned a kit a few years ago, but left it in the Midwest when I moved to CA. I brewed only twice, the first of which was awful and the second was decent (I can barely remember the styles of beers . . . both amber ales I think).

I started looking into some local homebrew shops in the LA area yesterday and found the Culver City Home Brewing Supply Co. (http://www.brewsupply.com/) . . located along my commute home from work! I’m the proud new owner of a standard kit, which is a bit nicer than the one I had previously. I upgraded to the auto-siphon . . . I think it will save me a ton of time.

I can hardly wait for tomorrow . . . I’ve got an Irish-style dry stout on deck!

Just had to share my excitement! This forum looks like it will be a great resource. I stare at a computer screen all day for my job, so I’ll be checking in regularly.

It is a great source of information, I just racked my first brew to the carboy for the second fermentation, had a little left in the tube just had to sample it and it taste just like Red Ale. My brewery has already expanded beyond the starter kit, after this first fermentation in the bucket I can definately see the advantages to using a glass carboy for the primary fermentation, you can see whats going on. With the bucket once you put the lid on its all a mystery until 7 days later.

So far things are going great on my first batch, after spending a few days here reading I now know I did a few things wrong none of which will ruin my beer (I hope) but all the same it may not be as good as it could have been.

bah! to step-up the exercizing, just use bigger beer bottles. A 22 oz bicep curl is much more strenuous than a 12 oz curl. :D
